Get your FREE Films Burns and Light Leaks here!

Some of you have seen the so called “film burn” (or sometimes called light leaks) on different creative pieces. The look typically comes from the misfeed of film through the camera gate behind the lens of a film camera, creating a beautiful but unintended look of red and yellowish or any variety of hues on the negative and the print. You can pay as much as $199 for a single standard definition clip from Artbeats or $499 for the complete collection. See it here. But here at digital cinema foundry you get a few of them today for FREE! I’ve created four different custom film burns in 720p resolution. You can download them in .zip format from the links below.

How to apply ‘em: Video Tutorial

I created my first set of film burns (FREE one’s) as an answer to achieving that vintage accent look of Indie film. Washes of color and light mesmerized me and I thought to myself how can I “bottle” up that effect? So I set out experimenting and created the free set that I now gift to you. My passion for film burns and light leaks didn’t stop there though and I continued to study different concepts of light, color and shape; refined the techniques I was using to create my LUSTER film burns and light leaks…. They are now available for the first time for download.

I’ve used them on award winning projects and to give my work the authentic look of Indie film. Experience the indie film look on your films and if for whatever reason you’re not completely satisfied, let me know and I’ll refund your money. SATISFACTION GUARANTEED OR YOUR MONEY BACK!!!

Features:

  • 10 Custom Film Burn/Light Leak Clips
  • HD 1080P
  • H.264
  • Instant Download
  • Cross Platform/Application Compatible
  • They’re Awesome!?!

Instructions:
The way to use these is to add them to your video track 2 or above the clip you wan to apply the film burn to. Then set the composite or transfer mode to “screen” adjust opacity to liking and throttle the opacity to taste with keyframing. You can also stack these on top of each and play with them to get any number of combinations and effects. I find the best place for these is at the beginning of a clip or as a really cool transition. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask :)

ver 1 downloaded but the archive utility says ‘operation error’ when it opens…I have tried with safari and firefox. would you be willing to email the files directly? they are only about 22 mb so maybe a yousendit upload? only if you have time though, I would like to use these in an edit that is due friday so anytime before then would be excellent! Thanks again!

Hey denverkr, So i download the files but the files seems to be broken or something. When i try to open it with vlc, it says that it doesn’t support the codec that the video has. I find it strange. but anyway i hope you’ll reply and help me with this problem.

Thanks in advance.

I’ve just downloaded the clips but non of my players can reproduce them (i have media player, quicktime, vlc, gom player…), can you tell me which codec you used for compression? maybe that way I can install it and solve the trouble.. :) It’s weird because vlc and gom are suppoused to play everything, because they have most of the codecs within them. thanks again!

Denver,

I am thoroughly looking forward to using these freebies but unfortunately most Windows users seem to be having difficulty with the APCN codec – it won’t play with VLC Media Player or import into Premiere / After Effects as stated above.

Any chance of a re-up in a format we can open please? Much appreciated.

Alistair.

On the same page is a "how to" video tutorial for FCP 7. I need to create a new one for FCP X. But what you do is bring the files in as an "event" in FCP X. Then when you want to use them you stack them on top of your video clips, right above your video clips. Then in the paramaters section of the film burn, at the bottom of the inspector window you set the composite or blending mode to "screen." This is all you must do :) Let me know if you have any other difficulties.
