Auzzie from down under Josh Miller has this really cool surfing teaser that he’s put together primarily to test post workflow from different cameras. Shot both on the RED One and 7D, he’s provided us a nice short little write-up. We’ll keep you posted as to when the finish is completed.

Here is his write-up:
After careful thought and recommendations I decided to use a Canon 7D to supplement RED one footage. A 50mm was used in conjunction with a ND2 to keep the aperture fairly wide. I also opted to shoot a few surfing scenes themselves with the 7D and a 300mm. I shot half the dolly shots on 24p with a 1/50 shutter speed and the other half at 50p and 1/100, mostly to give myself a bit of variety and go with what worked. I used the Indislider Mini 24″ to achieve the dolly shots, which I then had to further stabilise in post. When you weigh cost and value against somw slight shakes the Indislider became one of my favourite tools during this shoot, providing variety in the shoot while minimising the time spent setting up a track or spider dolly.

Color grading involved taking the flat unsaturated raw footage, crushing the blacks and then isn’t a standard three color corrector. The ability to shoot such a flat image is great when it comes to flexibility whilst grading in post. My main goal was to give the surf footage an original feel, grading accordingly. The Magic Bullet suite was used for a couple shots using a modified version of the Mojo Optimus preset. Film burn was done in AE using the Twitch plugin and overlaying Artbeats stock footage
at a low transparency whilst using blending options.

In terms of pictures quality, the 7D passed my expectations and beyond. The dailies I was looking at shocked me. Editing was done using a proxy based workflow, although I’ve been recommended Cineform’s Neoscene but am yet to purchase it.
