Our good friend Robin just emailed us this video he shot with the Canon 7D. Looks great and the write up keys in to some interesting pointers about using the 7D. More and more I have noticed people abandoning the 180 degree shutter rule on their outside shoots. My Utah friends do it all the time. Sometimes this choice is an obvious aesthetic one. For others, especially event shooters (I hate the word videographers), it is more about simplifying the shooting set ups. I also think it creates a hyper-crisp look to the final footage. Whether you like that look or not is purely subjective. I personally love and hate crisp (depending on my mood that day) as it takes you into the realm of not looking like film. It looks, well, like digital cinema. The softness is gone, in lieu of what appears to be “hyper detail” for lack of a better description.
For Robin, the choice to use a super-high shutter speed seemed to lean more towards aesthetics. He also discusses his custom presets among other goodness. You can find it in his write up over at his website here – elskid . He does mention the challenge of keeping everything in focus. I did beat out of him how he did the slow motion. I was hoping for an in-camera trick, but alas, no such luck. Follow the link to find the answer – here it is. One of those, “Duh Ryan!” moments for me.
Anyway, enjoy.
Best, Ryan
